Homer Simpson: Intergenerational Hated and Future Anxiety
"Oh, kids are great! You can teach them to hate what you hate!"
Here we have the second in our Homer the academic series.
Herein he is not being literally when he talks about making your kids hate what you hate as a good thing, he is commenting on how blood feud’s take shape, parents raise their sons to hate their neighbours. Cycles of violence, ideas the Last of Us 2 only scratched the surface on, the Simpsons were waxing poetically on years before.
When he says that kids are great he is further commenting on his own fears around the responsibility to raise kids the right way, he speaks of a man afraid of what his legacy will be and harm his children may breed in the world. He calculates the incalculable and sees all the potential pathways this actions could inspire in his kids.
He is the deepest character on the show and is a man haunted by the complexities of life.
Life lessons: Don't screw up your kids.
You can change the future based on how you raise your kids.
